Tonalism In Tuscany

This was painted last Spring as an attempt at creating a Tonalist landscape. I must admit that I am very happy with the results of this foray into Tonalism. I love the subtle colors in this palette.

This painted in oils on canvas applied to acid free fiber board. It is signed and dated on verso. Click HERE for more information on this painting or to purchase it.

Purple Mesa, Miniature Abstract Landscape

This tiny gem measures only 2.5"H X 3.5"W. It is oil on canvas, and evokes the southwest United States. One can just imagine a high mesa covered in purple sage, inhabited by the ancient Anasazi native Americans.

Abstract landscapes have great appeal for me. It is always a challenge to create a landscape with just a few well placed and thought out strokes of the brush. Even though this technique may look very simple, it is actually very complex, and must be mastered before one can implement it in the studio. The simple elegance achieved in this miniature with an economy of brush strokes is similar to the elegance achieved with Japanese brushwork.
